A History
At the confluence of two rivers, Peterborough and the area in and adjacent to the Square became the natural center of activity for the surrounding valley area. Schools were built, and the first public library in the United States was established in 1833. With the advent of the railroad and the building of a railroad station, what is now known as Depot Square quickly became a beehive of manufacturing activity producing items as diverse as pianos and carriages. The tradition of owner operated shops, which was established early on, remains today, and is the bases for the vibrant and diversified offerings that make up the Square unique.

Culture
Culturally, it has a surprising number of diverse offerings such as The Peterborough Players (a nationally recognized summer theater), for music; Monadnock Music, Electric Earth and summer Friday night concerts on the river. Add to that, lecture series such as the Amos Fortune Forum or the Monadnock summer lyceum, the Mariposa Museum and historical exhibits at the Monadnock Center for History and Culture.
